Engraving add a touch even more personal to custom rings .

We love personalization by engraving. It can be an obvious message on the outside of the ring or a discret one like a name inside the ring.

The laser engraving is kind of a black engraving, because the laser engraves by burning the metal, very precisely, and can be very deep also.

To get a more shinny engraving, more discret we use a diamond pin which will make like a scratch on the surface, this engraving is also cool inside the blue titanium rings but is also perfect on the tantalum, which is very dark.

Finger prints engraved

What a very personal statment having your spouse finger prints engraved on your ring !

The finger prints are yours, we don’t fake it, you will have to get your fingers dirty to provide them to us.

Then we reproduce them by computer and engraved them either inside or outside of your rings. Can be made by laser engraving or by a diamond pin engraving system.

Laser makes it black and diamond pin makes it shinny.

Custom contemporary rings made with mokume gane are directly a step above .

It’s a marriage of tradition with contemporary jewelry.

We, by cbijou, really love this random pattern, and also the process to make it is very unsual and it’s kind of being alchemy. We know what it’s going to be, how it’s going to look, but there is always a surprise at the end to see how beautiful it became.

There you can see the procedure we use and realise how much work it takes to get at least the nugget in which we will eventually make the ring. And also take a good care to see how we make to do the ring without interrupting the pattern, no welding , only cutting and forging !

Yes it’s in french, but look only at the pictures :

Carbon fiber is an amazing material offering a great dark contrast.

It was originaly invented to replace the glas fiber in technology where weight and strenght are very crucial, like sailing boats, racing cars, motorbikes and so on… But it actually a very very aesthetic material too.

The fibers are playing with the light and the black inlay, instead of being only black is really interesting in itself.

The carbon fiber is very strong, but doesn’t resist to abrasion, so it why it’s the best choice to use it as an inlay surrounded by metals on the rings.

You could completly ruin a carbon ring by rubing it on a stone, no doubt about it.

Steel used for creation of custom rings is perfect, if …

  • We are not having value only for precious metal.
  • We like a neutral clear grey
  • We don’t want dark / black metal like tantalum
  • We like not too heavy metal
  • We want a strong metal

Steel is light grey, and can be hammered, scratched  and it’s also a very, very good choice for polished / shinny jewelry because on this metal the polish will last for long time.

Steel was, for Cedric Chevalley, one of the first very favorite metal to use for his contemporary jewerly. Even though  he was not followed by the public, in the early 2000, most of the public were willing to buy more easily precious metal even the too soft silver…but Chevalley knew what he was doing and why… And 20 years after the public is really crazy about his creation made of steel, and the first customers who trust him are still so happy for this long lasting material.

Chevalley was always taking more his judgment as more valuable  then the value of the market, and that made him very successfull, with that consideration (more his knowledge about technology and aesthetic)  he didn’t disapoint his customers, even if they , at the beginning, would prefer another metal then steel.

This point is a very crucial point for the huge success of mood collection

Titanium is a fabulous material for ring !

No question for it despite of the haters who devalorisate it, do you know why ?

Because they don’t know how to work with !!!

So they say some lies like : titanium ring can’t be sized up . Totally wrong !

We can !

But let’s leave the polemics to give you the facts why we love it :

It’s super light, super super strong and very affordable !

So we can rely on it !

But this feature are also for some people a weak point, because the ring could feel in your hand to light, not enough weight, could seem for some people fake, that’s ok, it’s very personal, so for this people we advice to go to precious metal or tantalum.

The color of titanium is slighly a darker grey then palladium and steel. But much less dark then the tantalum.

Another super cool feature of the titanium is that we can color it with heat, and that can be from yellow to purple. But has to be protect from scratches, it can be perfect for the inside of the rings

Silver was, but is still very popular for jewelry, no question about that …
We have to connfess, that Cedric Chevalley was never very much for it, he didn’t appreciate much it’s softness and the fact that it’s color was also not stable.
He even did prefer to use special steel for his creations instead of any precious metal to make awesome long lasting creation like the very famous mood ring
But he did appreciate a lot silver for using it as inlays, and taking the advantage of it’s features but usually reinforced by another strong metal, like steel, titanium or even palladium or gold are stronger.
And last weak point is that any surface’s effects would disappear after short or longer time but will disappear if not protected by a tough material surounding.

How the Rings are Made

We use a simple 5-step process which helps and guides you to build a unique ring or set of rings for you and your partner.

Step 1: Shape

Shape and dimension are aesthetic choices and are also important for comfort.

Round shapes are a softer design and have a thinner appearance. The flat shapes appear bolder, have more presence, and will fit more comfortably.

The thickness and angles of the rings are very important in relation to comfort. For our designs, we advise the width to be between 1/4-1/2 of an inch.

To choose the best width for your rings, we recommend viewing the ring on your hand in a mirror. This will help you to see the ring from an objective point of view. Customers are often surprised to find that larger rings look incredible once they try them on.

Step 2: Aspect

Lost Wax Procedure.

This term refers to a process of casting metal, and then creating a model made of wax. This technology can be crafted in precious metals and in cro-mo alloy, but not in steel or tantalum.

Over time, this ring’s surface will accumulate scratches and marks. This adds to the charm of this material and will act as a built-in memory for your ring as you wear it. The scratches and marks contribute to the original character of your ring. Initially the surfaces will be smooth, and the first marks to appear will be significant.

Step 3: Material

Choosing the material is one of the most important steps.

This determines the look of the design as well as the price. Precious metals are not in every case the best choice for your design. This depends on the desired features you are looking for. Gold can be very interesting for pursuing color like rose, bronze, and yellow for example.

For neutral gray, other metals are better than white gold. Precious metals like palladium and platinum provide this neutral gray hue. Non-precious neutral gray metals include titanium, steel, and cro-mo alloy. Ceramics, wood, mokume-gane, carbon fiber, and tantalum are great for offering contrast and unique configurations.

Step 4: Engraving
This process can be as personalized as engraving your partner’s fingerprint and/or handwriting into the ring. We will provide more information about getting your fingerprint or hand-written message engraved later in the process.

Step 5: Stones & Settings
We source our stones from guaranteed, conflict-free providers.

The best stones to set on rings are diamond, sapphire, and ruby (without the use of synthetic stones). The beauty will be long-lasting and includes color and light refraction.

What we call Chrome-cobalt is actually an alloy of Chrome-cobalt-molybden.

This alloy is bio-compatible also used in dentistry, no worry at all for any allergy, and it’s also very durable.

It’s tone is a light grey, but using the lost wax technique it can look much darker depending also how rough we makes the aspects.

More rough will be the aspect darker it will looks.

This alloy is also a excellent choice for the rings with outsides engraving because will be very stable

The beauty of contemporary rings made of white gold, yellow gold, rose gold or red gold

We are amazed by the beauty offered by the Golds !

It’s an amazing material, and it’s not for no reason that was the most coveted material on Earth and in history ever; we understand it, and we agree it’s an MAGICAL material. And very nice to work with.

Although if we, at Cbijou, are not at all oriented for the cost of the material, we have to confess we love using gold to take the advantage for the contrast it offers, and will last for ever, because gold will not oxyde, but we prefer to protect from attrition with a more though material like tantalum, titanium and/or steel which are really strong and long lasting and what even better offer a great contrast with the golds.

What is the color of gold ? How can we have rose gold or white gold ?

Is it by a magic trick ??

So sorry, but it’s not …

That obviously something confusing, and I like to clarify this, it gives more understanding and more affinity for what we understand.

1° : Gold is yellow.

2° :  We never use pure gold, pure gold would be 999°° or also titled in some country : 24K (capital k) or

3° : For jewelry we usually use the 18K / 750°° that means there is one quarter of alloy add to the pure gold like the sketch beside

4° We can get different colored golds by playing with the alloy, for example adding copper to the gold we get rose gold and by adding palladium ww will get a grey / white gold but slighlty yellow ( explanation below)

5° Black gold was a scam ! Never existed but was only platted of black ruthénium so doesn’t last ! It’s why we work with tantalum from more then 15 years, because it offers a very dark color on it’s own.

What is white gold ? Why does it becomes yellow ?

Actually it’s better for oyu ot know this also a trap … sorry for that . Sorry not sorry actually because we prefer to give the true and create long lasting beauties !

White gold as sold in stores is always platted of rhodium which is super clear, near white. But the “coats” is only one hair thick so … it will disapear sooner or later and people say “awww, my white gold ring becomes yellow…”

Because the white gold is plated and the gold under the rhodium is slighly yellow. ( you remember ? the gold alloy with palladium becomes white/grey gold)

Technically we never call the white gold “white gold” but we call it grey gold . BUT knowing that, the grey gold can be super nice, if we are not looking for a neutral grey, nor a very light grey, it can be super nice and by Cbijou we would never, ever hide it under a coat of rhodium !

Neutral grey, clear or slightly yellow ?

It is a question that comes naturally when looking for wedding rings.

I have been creating wedding rings for more than 15 years. With each couple wanting a custom-made creation, I notice that there are many misunderstandings, misinformation and even mystery about the technical data. So I understand why you would ask yourself the question.

But it’s not really rocket science, if you can clarify the words.

Are you looking for wedding rings made of a neutral and grey precious metal? Then, the article below will interest you.

On the other hand, if your search is not focused on a precious metal then go directly here: creation of custom-made wedding rings or creation of an engagement ring.

Let's start by defining what white gold is:

What is the difference between white gold and grey gold?

There is no such thing! White gold is just a misleading term in commercial language… Both denominations refer to the same metal alloy (perhaps the term white gold is more “sexy” than grey gold).

Whether we are talking about white gold or grey gold, it is the same alloy obtained by combining gold with palladium. Fine gold (pure gold) will always be yellow.

18K gold is alloyed with other metals to modify its properties, such as hardness and/or colour – pale yellow, bronze, pink or red. (Black gold does not exist, it is a plating, or petrol…) but I advise you to read this article if you are interested in dark metal.

platinum rings

I would say that platinum is a very good choice in terms of material preciousness. At the moment, it is a good plan, because its price has really dropped. It is nearly 3X cheaper than it has been over the past 10 years. However, to avoid any disappointment, the buyback offer is quite low compared to the original price because the material is complicated to recycle.

What does the K stand for in 24K, 18K, 14K, 9K gold? or 999, 750, 585, 375?

It defines the fineness of a precious metal. Fineness refers to the amount of fine metal contained in the alloy.

Example: the stamp 750 means that the alloy is of 750 per thousand. So, for 10 grams of 750 gold, you have 7.5 grams of fine gold in the alloy. The rest of the alloy can vary according to the properties that are sought for: colour, strength, ductility… To obtain white gold, palladium will be incorporated: 2.5gr for 10gr of alloy. To obtain a very white gold alloy, I tend to recommend 14K gold because there will be more palladium.

24K gold corresponds to 999/°°°, 18K to 750/°°°, 14K to 585/°°° and 9K to 375/°°°.

Do not confuse diamond carats (C) with gold carats (K). I will come back to diamond carats in a future article, but just know that the diamond carat is a measure of weight.

White gold is plated in 99% of cases.

To obtain a gold jewel with a very neutral and shiny appearance, white gold is plated with ruthenium (very white precious metal). It would be okay if you did not intend to wear your jewellery and thus did not subject it to wear and tear. The plating is of 15 microns (a big hair) and one day you may say: “My grey ring is turning yellow!”. Unfortunately, yes! The white gold below the plating is not as neutral as ruthenium, which appeared so white when the ring was new.

If you wish to choose white gold, I strongly advise against plating, but rather to have the specific colour of gold directly from the beginning, without “hiding” it with plating, since the colour below will reappear. Good white gold alloys are very close to being neutral. If you do not compare them with an even more neutral metal, they really look grey.

What is palladium ?

It is a precious metal, from Siberia, South Africa, the United States and Australia, from the platinum family. Its color is neutral grey, its density is very close to that of silver, which will make the jewel a little lighter than a gold jewel (nearly a third lighter).

It is worked in the same way as gold and the result will be the same. Without being a copy of white gold, it is a valuable metal, but palladium is about twice as inexpensive as gold.

Palladium alloys used in jewellery are 950°°° or 500°°°.

I have been advising palladium for more than 10 years for the jewellery creations, when the criteria are: precious, grey/white and durable.

There is article written especially about Palladium : click here

here are some palladium creations:

Palladium-alloyed white gold has a slightly stronger hardness than palladium 950. However, there are ways to finish a palladium ring in order to obtain a very strong metal.

The advantages of choosing precious metals are personal. The material can be recycled to make new contemporary creations from the gold of old jewellery. We can even obtain white gold from yellow gold jewellery.

I deliberately did not mention platinum in this article because I will come back to it later check this article there!

All this information is given in order to allow you to make a better choice with the appropriate data. If you have any further questions, feel free to send me an email at cedric@cbijoux.com, I would be happy to help you.

what are your actual criteria ?

You are not looking for precious metal jewellery, your criteria are:

>The neutral grey appearance and durability – then steel, chromium-cobalt or titanium will be the best options for you.

>The aspect must be as dark as possible?? – it will be tantalum for you!

Creation of custom engagement ring, by Cbijou

The creation of an engagement ring is THE symbol for a proposal

How do you get an engagement ring?

You can simply push the door of a jewellery store and choose from a wide range of engagement rings, this is a very simple way to do it, and it will work.

You can also go a step further and have your engagement ring custom made – a unique creation that will symbolize your wedding proposal to the person you wish to spend your life with.

In my opinion, engagement rings are often very kitsch. In the United States, it is customary to offer an engagement ring with a large solitaire (which should normally be a diamond).

Here are some examples:

bague-de-fiancailles-sur-le-web

If you like this kind of creations (examples above) or if it is the type of ring you are looking for, you can stop reading and end follow your saerch elswhere , where is more classical style, not contemporary, we are not your Guys . You will find your happiness very easily elsewhere.

However, if you are looking for something similar to this :

bagues-fiancailles-tantale-diamant

… then we are all good, we can continue together, Cbijoux will be able to create your dream ring.

Should we necessarily offer a classic engagement ring?

I firmly believe that all customs, all habits can be improved, especially if they happen to be obsolete. This is when the creator, the designer comes into play.

The contemporary engagement ring can be created with the diamond, which is a very strong symbol, along with very beautiful reflections. Other precious stones such as sapphires or rubies can also make very beautiful creations. However, the engagement ring must first of all match her/him, so the stones are not an obligation.

I, Cédric Chevalley, can help you make your proposal with panache, by offering a contemporary engagement ring – a creation that is at the height of your aesthetic and the person to whom you intend it.

Here are some examples of rings that could be suitable as engagement rings:

The purpose of showing you these images is to inspire your creation, to help you describe what you would like, and to allow you to tell me your different criteria. To do this, you can also send me links to images of my creations that you like.

Where is an engagement ring worn and by whom?

In my opinion, the engagement ring can be worn on the left ring finger to begin with. After the wedding, it can be worn on the right hand, to make way for the wedding ring on the left ring finger.

The engagement ring is currently also offered by the woman proposing to her future husband, or future wife, or offered by a man to his man. Here again, the “customs and traditions” have evolved and the rules have become obsolete, only one rule in my opinion remains and must remain: the engagement ring represents the spouses’ wish to marry and live together the rest of their lives.

It also frequently happens that the engagement ring is a pair of rings, so that each of the two can have his own.

In order for me to create the engagement ring of your dreams, you will have to define several criteria, such as :

– the profile of the ring (square/flat, rounded)

– the width of the ring.

– do we plan to make an engagement ring that can then be “upgraded” into a wedding ring ? (we can imagine many variations, such as making a diamond ring as an engagement ring and then make it fit onto a larger ring for the wedding)

– the materials and qualities you would like to see

– the budget

– the deadline

– a very important fact: finger size. For that, you can ask a jewerly shop to measure a ring you can borrow (discretly) but make sure that she or he wears it at the left ring finger / annular.

You can follow the instructions I give here for the creation of a pair of wedding rings as this applies perfectly and 100% for the creation of engagement rings.
